THE LAST HOME GAME

When High Grade Jay found a level patch beneath the autumn trees, he set out to bring back the sound of a ball striking a bat. He laid down a full diamond, raised a red grandstand against the hill, and marked the place with a clock so nobody could claim they missed first pitch.

Inside, the clubhouse carries on like a little piece of game day survived intact. Arcade machines glow beneath the bunting, a Nuka Cola counter serves cold bottles, and the glass lounge looks out over the field. There is even room to sit quiet when the cheering is done.

I reckon the score matters less now than it once did. What Jay saved here is the habit of neighbors gathering together, taking turns, and playing fair. In a hard country, that kind of fellowship is worth keeping past the last home game.
