When the first hard winter settled over Appalachia, High Grade Jay decided the old Christmas customs deserved a place to survive. He put up a red barn, fenced a small yard, and built a sleigh from whatever sturdy parts he could find.

Inside the cottage, Jay kept things simple and warm. A tree stands by the fireplace, gifts cover the tables, and even the vending machines wear lights and snowflakes. Outside, the sleigh waits beside its great dark reindeer as if morning might still bring a proper run.

I remember Christmas before the war, and I reckon the best part was never the wrapping paper or the music. It was the reminder of a Child born to bring hope into a troubled world. Jay’s little camp holds on to that warmth, and there is no shame in letting it shine through a cold Appalachian night.
