QUARTER PAST COFFEE
I remember stopping at roadside diners before the war, when a fellow could set down his tools and sit a spell without checking the tree line first. High Grade Jay must have a few memories of those places too. At Quarter Past Coffee, he has put two little clock towers over a pair of open diner wings, with a bright coffee sign right between them.
Jay built the place around red booths, curved counters, and enough chrome to catch every bit of light. The rocket lamps and little figures on the seats give it some humor, while the worn timber keeps it from looking too precious for this broken road. I took particular notice of the central steps and the way the two sides line up. That sort of balance does not happen by accident.
I reckon he started with the old diner fittings and built the frame to suit what he could save. Whether it came from an architect’s training or years of careful practice, the result feels familiar. The road outside has seen better days, and the clocks will not bring any of them back. Still, I thanked the Lord for another reminder that a man can make something decent from what is left.
