BUILDER story – Dumplin Head
Dumplin Head is known throughout the wasteland as the Chef Builder, a playful twist on the title “chief builder.” It is a fitting name for more than one reason. First, she has earned a reputation as an exceptionally talented builder, capable of turning crumbling ruins, abandoned storefronts, and piles of salvaged junk into shelters that are as sturdy as they are strangely beautiful. Second, she is rarely seen without her oversized chef hat perched firmly on her head. Whether she is laying foundations, wiring generators, defending a worksite, or bargaining for supplies, the hat is always there, sometimes clean and bright, but more often stained with soot, grease, and what appears to be dried blood.
As to why Dumplin Head insists on wearing the hat, no one seems to know for certain, and she has never been particularly eager to explain it. Over time, however, several rumors have spread among traders, settlers, and the occasional terrified dinner guest. The most credible story claims that she once belonged to the infamous Raider gang known as the Gourmands, a group remembered for treating human flesh as both food and entertainment. According to the tale, Dumplin Head served as one of their cooks before eventually leaving the gang behind and turning her talents toward building. The chef hat, some say, is a tribute to her former life. Others believe it is a warning, a reminder that although she may now spend her days constructing homes and settlements, the person she once was has never completely disappeared.
Whether any of these stories are true has never been fully confirmed by Dumplin Head herself. Whenever someone asks directly, she usually smiles, adjusts her hat, and changes the subject to blueprints, foundation supports, or what kind of seasoning pairs best with “fresh meat.” She may be friendly, generous, and even willing to help a stranger repair a broken camp, but it is still wise to exercise caution around her kitchen. Under no circumstances should you accept a dish without first learning what is in it, and you should never agree to a late-night dinner invitation at her home, especially if she asks you to come alone. Dumplin Head may be one of the finest builders in the wasteland, but some doors are better left unopened, and some recipes are better left untasted.
