THE GLASS ARCADE

High Grade Jay set this glass-front shop near Whitespring, where plenty of folks still wander with caps in their pockets and old ideas about living fine. He built it for a little tale about a gold digger, though to my eye the place says as much about old America as any joke could. We used to fill stores with things we wanted and call it progress.

Inside, glass cases hold toy cars, comics, dolls, and all manner of small treasures. Bright panels run along the walls, and two Vault Boy figures watch over the counter like cheerful salesmen. The front window has a stranger display, with mannequins dressed to stop a passerby in their tracks, while a quieter room upstairs gives a tired shopper somewhere to sit.

I cannot say I miss every part of shopping before the war. Too many people spent what they did not have on things they did not need. Still, there is honest skill in the way Jay shaped daylight through all that glass and made a crowded shop feel open. Even now, folks appreciate a clean, bright place where they can browse, talk, and remember how ordinary life once felt.
