Small Print

Before the war, that big sign would have promised a cold drink and a happier afternoon. These days I reckon its best promise is tucked around back. Georges has fitted stairs, little rooms, and places to sit into the steel that holds the advertisement upright. From the road you notice the billboard first. Look a little closer and there is a whole household living in its small print.

I imagine he came upon that framework and saw useful space where most folks saw the back of an old sign. A few salvaged panels, a sound stairway, and a chair facing the trees would have been a start. The books and little keepsakes tell me the rest came one careful choice at a time. Georges keeps his own history quiet, but he leaves plenty of evidence that a neglected corner can still become a home.
