LANTERNSTEP HOUSE

A flight of stone steps leads through flowers and lanterns to Svetlana’s latest home. Brick walls rise around a tall strip of glass, and the front terrace gives her a clear view of anyone approaching. It is a handsome house that feels protected without looking hostile.

The rooms are warm and familiar, with wood floors, comfortable chairs, a compact kitchen, and shelves for plants and small companions. A side market lets her trade with travelers without bringing the whole wasteland through her private rooms. Sunlight reaches deep inside and gives every collected thing a proper place.

Lanternstep House may be the closest Svetlana has come to opening her door again. She still keeps her own company and chooses her visitors carefully, but the lamps stay lit and the market sign remains outside. For a woman who once wanted only isolation, that small welcome says more than a speech ever could.
