BLOCK 76

Svetlana raised this square, depressing house from dark boards and steel panels, giving it the look of an old workers’ block from across the ocean. The front offers little welcome beyond a heavy door and a narrow porch. That plain face is exactly how she likes it.

The inside tells a different story. A red and white kitchen, tidy dining booth, model railway, bedroom, and carefully arranged plants soften the hard shell. She keeps the rooms practical and orderly, with every keepsake placed where she can find it again.

Block 76 is a fortress built without battlements. Its strength comes from thick walls, simple rooms, and the quiet discipline of the woman living there. Svetlana may not invite the neighborhood inside, but she has made a sturdy place where grief and bad weather can be kept on the other side of the door.
