UNDERFLOW STATION

There is an old steel bridge in Burning Springs that Rad Rux looked at differently from most travelers. He used its trusses and the space below them to build Underflow Station, a dam and pump works tucked into the crossing. The weathered office and rusting machinery make it look as though the place has been waiting years for another shift to arrive.

Inside, he has crowded the workshop with pipes, gauges, tools and a large wheel set into the machinery. A worn sofa shares room with equipment that takes up most of the floor. It is the sort of arrangement I recognize from working buildings, where every spare corner eventually becomes storage.

Rux has given the bridge a convincing second history without covering up its first one. I cannot tell you whether every valve would still hold pressure, but I can see the care in how the pieces meet. After a lifetime around construction, that is the kind of detail that keeps me looking.
