THE RED ROOF INN THE WATER

Chicken Bone found a stretch of water where the old shoreline had nearly swallowed every useful foundation. Instead of backing away, he drove new supports into the wet ground and raised an inn above the current. The red roof became a marker that travelers could spot through the mist.

Stone walls and narrow walkways divide the rooms, while windows keep the dark water in view. Furnishings are tucked close to the walls so the passages stay clear, and every lamp earns its place. Nothing here feels delicate, even with water pressing against the building from every side.

I would not choose to sleep over deep water during a storm, but Chicken Bone built the place with a superintendent’s eye. The braces are deliberate, the rooms are orderly, and the red roof gives the whole inn a little dignity. A weary traveler could do worse than a dry bed and a sound floor.
